Loving gifts for Mom

My siblings and I, and other extended family, were blessed by our mother's long life. She left us when she was 93! Loving to send her gifts, we all did so when we could. She became brutally honest with age, by sharing "I don't need any more".....gowns, clothes, trinkets.

Now that I am older, I can understand how  "things" can be just more clutter when a life has slowed down. I FINALLY began to heed my  mother's comments by sending items that she could eat, truly use, or "use up."  Stamps in a card was an idea that I gained from a friend who sent my mother those each birthday.  Providing her with small box of favorite candies, a bottle of her favorite perfume, gift certificates to her local grocery,a check to use for whatever she needed or wanted became my way of remembering her. When selecting cards, it was fun to make those a part of the gift by including ones depicting "her favorite things": owls, animals of all kinds, flowers, inspirational or biblical verses. I paid attention to the comments she would make about what she needed, enjoyed, and had appreciated from someone else. To that end, I think my loving gifts became even more so!   "Listen to your mother," is still good advice!!
